There are many different areas of law. Some lawyers practice in all areas while others chose to focus on one area of law. Lawyers that practice many areas of law are called general practitioners. A general practitioner may not focus on every area of law, but usually a few different areas. Someone who specializes in a specific area of law is a specialist. Specialists are focused on certain types of cases, such as criminal cases. If you chose a specialist make sure he or she practices in the area of law that meets your needs. For most legal issues that are of a routine matter can be handled by a general practitioner.

For complex cases or cases with a lot of money or serious charges a specialist may be the best choice. In most cases your lawyer will refer you to someone else if they feel they can not handle your case.

There are a few different types of lawyers. Mostly the type of lawyer refers to any special training they may have had or their position in the court system and to what extent they can practice law. An attorney is the type of lawyer that can represent you in court and give you legal advice. All attorney’s have passed a bar exam for the state they practice in and can handle all aspects of your case. An advocate is someone appointed by the court that is not regulated by any legal association. They can represent you in court.

Conveyancers are lawyers who have passed an exam allowing them to deal in property matters. Paralegals are not actual lawyers, as they can not give legal advice or represent you in court, but they often work side-by-side with lawyers to gather information and complete paperwork. You could use a paralegal to draw up general legal papers, such as a will. You should always make sure your lawyers education background makes them able to handle your case.

Lawyers either practice with a firm or in a private office. Firms are large groups of lawyers that work together on cases. With a firm you may end up paying larger costs because you will have more than one attorney working on your case. These lawyers also tend to have more experience in complex matters and you are sure to get a lawyer that has some special expertise in your case matter. Private practice lawyers may have two or three lawyers in their office, but each handles their own cases. You usually get more attention working with lawyers from a private office. The choice between a firm or private practice is completely up to you.

Differentiating between different types of lawyers can be confusing, so never be afraid to ask questions before choosing your lawyer. Make sure they have the background in education and experience to handle your case. If you have a complicated case you really need to make sure they can do an adequate job for you. Being educated before you walk into the lawyers office is the best way to make sure you chose the correct lawyer.
